ASTANA Astana is the capital city of Kazakhstan. The city lies on the banks of the Ishim River in the north-central part of Kazakhstan, within the Akmola Region, though administered as a city with special status separately from the rest of the region. A 2020 official estimate reported a population of 1,136,008 within the city limits, making it the second-largest city in the country, after Almaty, which had been the capital until 1997. The city became the capital of Kazakhstan in 1997; since then it has grown and developed economically into one of the most modern cities in Central Asia. In 2021, the government selected Astana as one of the 10 priority destinations for tourist development. Modern Astana is a planned city, following the process of other planned capitals. After it became the capital of Kazakhstan, the city dramatically changed its shape. The city's master-plan was designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. As the seat of the government of Kazakhstan, Astana is the site of the Parliament House, the Supreme Court, the Ak Orda Presidential Palace and numerous government departments and agencies. It is home to a range of futuristic buildings, including many skyscrapers. |
AKTAU Aktau resort is located on the shore of the Caspian Sea, with great beaches that attract tourists. On the coast, relaxation by the water is available from May to the end of September. The hottest period is the calendar summer, in July-August, the average daytime temperatures are 31 degrees, at night the temperature drops slightly up to plus 27. Bathing will be most comfortable from June, during the summer months the water in the lake warms up to 23 degrees. The shores of the Caspian Sea have always been famous for healing mud and mineral waters. Rest on the beach, hunting and fishing, rafting and kiting, various hiking trips will not let you get bored. The city has several cultural centres, a concert hall, cinemas and dozens of gyms and sports grounds. One may stroll the city streets for hours on end, admiring the architectural ensembles, green alleys lined with poplars and acacias, emerald-green lawns and a park. |
BURABAY In the Akmola region, there is the famous resort Burabay. In the resort area there are several lakes, the most famous of which is Lake Borovoe. Combination of magnificent mountains, blue lakes, pine woods and larch forests created unique beautiful landscapes of nature. Surrounded by coniferous forest and mountains, the lake lies at an altitude of 480 meters above sea level. Tourists come to Burabay all the year round, in summer season they sunbathe on the sandy beaches and swim in the lake, and in the winter time they ski on the slopes of the local mountains. The resort is very popular “koumiss” treatment. Koumiss prepared by fermenting fresh mare or camel milk. In ancient times, this sour-milk carbonated drink was called the “Heroes’ drink”, because the mare's milk gives vigor and strength. Burabay resort is a comfortable place for tourists with different budgets. Hotels of various categories from 2-3 stars to the prestigious international brand are ready to receive guests. Borovoe resort is one of two places in Kazakhstan where gambling business is officially allowed. Casinos of various classes provide their services to guests. |
SHYMBULAK Shymbulak Ski Resort is the largest one in Central Asia. The resort lies at 2,200 metres (7,200 feet) above sea level in the Zaiilisky Alatau Mountain Range (part of the Tian Shan) above Almaty in Kazakhstan. Shymbulak was the first downhill ski run in the former Soviet Union. The Shymbulak ski resort is located 25km south of Almaty in Southern Kazakhstan, close to the border with Kyrgyzstan. Shymbulak is a great destination for lovers of winter sports and the great outdoors given its close proximity to the centre of Almaty. It is easily reachable from the centre of the city in under one hour and makes for a perfect day out in any season! There are three ski lifts at the resort which culminate at Talgar Pass (3,200 metres) with great views to the city below. If you do not ski, it’s still possible to buy a ticket for the ski lifts to take in the views. The resort is easily reachable by cable car from nearby Medeu (home of the world’s highest ice-skating rink). The resort has many other activities available including horse riding, tracked vehicle rides, paragliding and more. |
ALMATY Almaty is the former capital of Kazakhstan and its current financial, scientific, cultural, historical and industrial center. With nearly 2 million inhabitants, it is also Kazakhstan’s largest city and the one most visited by tourists. Located in southeast Kazakhstan at the foot of the Zailiyskiy Alatau branch of the Tian Shan Mountains, the city is naturally divided into upper and lower sections. Almaty is a very green city, with more than eight thousand hectares of parks, gardens and squares. It is the cultural center of the country, with many museums, theaters and a diverse entertainment life. |
